Good evening friends, I know that the subject of the vision has already been put into question as it is the use of glasses, contact lenses and wait 2 years after a surgery before trying to joing FFL, etc... but if I am already a member? Can i have an eye surgery during my vacations and have no problem with the FFL. Thank you.

I had the same question, thanks for posting it. BTW, You have to wait 1 year not 2 before applying. Personally, I figured I'd be Y-4 as Y-3 is minus 3 maximum I am minus 4.5. You only need Y-3 to join Paras. If you do not want to join Paras the whole surgery thing is pointless really. However, there are other things to keep in mind. How good is your French? Mine was really good until I was 18 (23 now) when I joined an English department boom no French no more and I forgot everything. What I want to say is that you may want to consider performing the surgery (if you can afford it) then wait 1 year and during that year you would work on your French. From what I have gathered here, French allows you to get promoted faster, gives more prestige and of course will help a lot in a naturalization process I think no matter how good as a legionnaire if you are not fluent in French I don't think you will ever get a French citizenship even if you are Rambo. Otherwise, you go there ASAP and learn French there. You may have a better learning experience in your country. I read negative comments on the internet on the way they teach French in the legion but that may be some false propaganda maybe an actual service member can help us in that. Other stuff also to keep in mind is how expensive is eye surgery in Mexico? Here (Egypt) a PRK which is usually prefered by military institutions goes for a maximum of 4000 EGP which is well like 300-400 Dollars it is very cheap in my country. Can you afford it in Mexico+ visa expenses+ air ticket? Keep in mind that in your country it might go for as high as 2000$ like the USA, in France I think 2K+ euros You have to think about that. 300-400$ are pretty affordable for anyone a round air ticket will cost me the same, so it is easy for me to do it here. Also, did you check whether you are eligible to be performed on or not?
Sorry for the long talk, you have the same issue as me so I thought I'd share my problems with you because they are probably the same problems you are facing.

French lessons in the Legion are a joke (same basics for everyone and whatever your level is). The only possibility to improve, is up to yourself. Do not get bored listening to other French people's conversations, even if it doesn't concern or interest you. It can be instructive

Thank you for your answers. My French is very basic. My idea is to take a few days before presenting the doors of the Legion, to learn a little more French already being in France.

I'm afraid you won't learn much French in just "a few days" in France. Being myself in the process of learning a new language, I can tell you there are numerous free ressources available on the web. So start there. Then you can use the few days in France before joining to practice the language. But you need the basics before.

Yea, yea . You will learn French in five days. :)

Joke aside. I understand what you talkin about. I know that is case with my English. I understand very well almost everything, but when I need to speak I stutter a little bit, because I'm not used to speak that language. But if your knowledge of language is basic (as you said) I don't know they would work for you.

It's true that the legion isn't the best school for learning French. Hearing courva every other word in todays legion will not really be of a big help. However you will pick up the language; how quickly is up to you. And let's face it all the orders will be written out in French. It's up to each and everyone to look up words and phrases. Once in your regiment nothing will stop you watching the news in French on the tele or on your laptop. Don't forget that you will be sent on your corporal's course and then giving your own orders - in French.

Just go to any civil doctor or eye specialist. You'll have your assurance.

Dusaslob, come to Europe and practise more your English.

What is Dusaslob? :)

I am already in Europe. What use of being in another non-English speaking country? OK, you will be forced to communicate in English because is definitely most universal language. For that purpose best country for learning English would be one of Scandinavian countries. There all most all speak English. But not all folks in some EU countries (France, German in in particolare) are willing to speak English even if they know, because of national pride. Which is understandable in some way.
Ex-Yu countries are also good with English, but usually among young population. But I would feel extremely stupid if I speak English with someone here.

Anyway i'm satisfied with level of my English, it's French i have to learn and practice.
