He was Support. Even the SF groups have their cooks, clerks, and mechanics. Those guys will all be Airborne qualified, but will not have gone through SFAS/Q-Course.
The way to spot them ( SF Support guys) in uniform is 1) They wear a Maroon beret, though with an SF Flash and DUI (Cap badge), and they wear the SF unit patch, but without a special forces tab. Here's an example:

Pictured is the Chaplain (
Aumônier) and Chaplain's assistant for 3rd Bn, 10th SFG. Both wear maroon berets instead of green, though they both have the Green flash of 10th SFG. The SGT at left is wearing the aformentioned SF DUI (Distinctive Unit Insignia); at right, you see the Padre (note the cross on his beret) wearing a SF unit patch without a SF tab. These guys are SF support Bubbas; assigned to 10th group, but not actual Snake-eaters themselves.
