I'm not bothered how they execute me, as long as it is done straight away. I certainly would not like it to go on for years and years with appeals like in the US. Or wondering if each morning is going to be my last as in China.

Anyway getting back on the subject of what happened on this day 27 April in history (or maybe not exactly;);))
1945 Italian partisans capture Benito Mussolini at Dongo (Lake Como)

If your destiny is to be shot dead with your mistress, where better than Lake Como, which, in the words of Shelley, ‘exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty, with the exception of the Arbutus Islands in Killarney’?

It was in Giulino di Mezzegra, a tiny village in the mountains above the lake, that a handful of communist partisans executed the Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta Petacci on 28 April 1945. The Duce was 61 and his amante 33 — two years older than his daughter Edda.

The partisans loaded their corpses and those of other Fascist leaders — executed separately down by the lake — on to a lorry and drove the 70 miles to Milan where they dumped them in Piazzale Loreto. A huge crowd soon gathered to defile the corpses, especially those of Mussolini and Petacci, which were later strung upside down from the girders of a petrol station in the square. Two days later, in Berlin, Hitler took the Roman option and committed suicide.

But Mussolini — once described by Winston Churchill as ‘the Roman genius’ — had had no intention of doing anything of the sort. He was en route for the Swiss border at the northern end of Lake Como with a small German escort when chance or God intervened to seal his fate.

Mussolini had left both his wife, Rachele, and his mistress behind in Milan. But -Petacci could not live without the Duce and had caught up with him in Como.

On its way to the border, in the village of Dongo, Mussolini’s convoy ran into a flimsy roadblock manned by a dozen or so partisans who had come down from their mountain hideout, desperate for a smoke. The Germans — anxious to get to Switzerland — agreed to let the partisans search the vehicles.

Putting on a pair on sunglasses, Mussolini disguised himself as a German corporal and sat with the German troops. But one of the partisans recognised his profile from the propaganda posters plastered on walls the length and breadth of Italy.

A few months later, having lost the general election in July 1945, Churchill went on a painting holiday to Lake Como — now super-fashionable with the likes of George Clooney, who owns a lakeside palazzo. Italy, it is worth mentioning, is a nation of conspiracy theorists — perhaps because here in Italy the conspiracy theorist is sometimes right. So, Mussolini is killed on Lake Como and a couple of months later Churchill just happens to come to Lake Como to paint? Come off it!

Thus an entire new sector of the Italian conspiracy industry was born — dedicated to proving that Churchill came to Lake Como (he came back in 1947 too, and would return at least once more) for altogether murkier reasons.

If he thought that he could count on his old buddy Adolf to send in his main man, Otto, he could think again, because Otto Skorzeny was 'otherwise engaged' taking part in the defence of the German provinces of East Prussia and Pomerania,

And again Keep on the subject 1956, Rocco Francis Marchegiano best known as Rocky Marciano retires;
On April 27, 1956, world heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano retires from boxing at age 31, saying he wants to spend more time with his family. Marciano ended his career as the only heavyweight champion with a perfect record–49 wins in 49 professional bouts, with 43 knockouts.

sorry about the put you to sleep commentary:

(I mean it's lil bit morbid to talk on forum about things like this, but in other hand I truly believe in free speech and most of things should be spoken)

That was really interesting read Joe. Not many of this came as surprise to me except that is been used until 1970!
In other hand... (or head :)) If I'm asked tomorrow in which way I want to be executed, I would choose guillotine.
Don't have to answer this question, but what would you choose Joy? What about you Jonny?

Hmmm, a hard one to choose, Dusa, but being smothered to death by a sexy woman sitting on my face springs to mind. 😇

Today is the 250th aniversary of the first landing of Europeans on the eastern shores of The Great Southern land, today mainly known as Australia. On the 29th of April 1770 the British naval vessel Endeavour, under the command of Captain James Cook anchored off the shores of what they named Botany Bay, just south of the now great city of Sydney. And the rest is history, of course.

Nothing much else of significance really happened unti Jonny stepped ashore not far away from Botany Bay about 220 years later.

Ok Dusa, as for a bad way to die:

Here I have a horror story for you, and it’s a true one, happens every day.

Can you perhaps imagine yourself, naked, behing held down by some strong person while somebody else is chopping your arms off at the shoulders and the legs close to the crotch. Then you are thrown into a hot grille over an open fire, while occasionally turned over until you were well done?

Sounds far fetched? But not unfortunately, this is exactly what bats are experiencing all over China and other Asian countries, like Indonesia, for instance.

Now, I’m no friends of bats or anything, I’m no vegan, and I eat meat and fish, but just take a few moments to think what terrible pain these bats in the following picture had to endure before they died. Those horrible silent screams says it all.

We are not the only ones that feel pain. Animals feel exactly the same thing.

But WHO apparently says that wet markets in Asia is just fine. Go figure.

Wednesday, May 2, 1945.

Reports that Adolph Hitler is dead by the German news to the world at 10.25 last night.

The British press then reported it and there was a sense of final relief.

Followed by VE day on May 8. My adopted mother's birthday, She was 34 and took me to the local town centre to celebrate and clamber all over the assorted military vehicles.

What better way to be remembered than bowing out at Camerone?
I haven't been here too much lately, as I've been taking time to get to grips with Microsoft Office 360. It's not that, I'd gotten into my routine, sport in the morning, which is an hour away. Come back, sit outside and read for an hour and then it's down to the ordinator.
On the bill is Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, + French all of which I use in my line of work.
Up to now that hasn't stopped me from posting... Until I could not connect to internet. My telephone could and Erika's computer could. I tried everything until Erika suggests that I should use the 'recovery' system. I was a bit skeptical as I like keeping up to date with the latest technology, I mean if I lost pack office 2019, I'd go stir crazy.
Erika, bless her heart, guarantees me that It won't be affected.
So I got internet back "and man that was all she wrote". It takes about two hours and 300 bahts to get the latest anything, installed on your computer here in Thailand. Except that everywhere is closed. However Erika asked around and found a dinghy place who could install anything for 200 bahts. Except that he only has Office 2010 ! I mean like ten (10) years out of date.
So what you might say, as long as you're keeping your hand in and there are always things to learn. Except that I was working on a slide show which I was hoping to impress a possible employer with. It's about Burkina Faso. It's to give the employer an idea of the briefing that I will give to new arrivals and TDYers (tour of duty).

Great, I go into a basic history of the country, with zooming in and flashing high lights and all the rest. Next it goes in to the emergency measures to take in case the camp is attacked and then the contact numbers and the 'how to get to you Embassy in Ghana" Should the merde hit the ventilo. Which I had started with Power Point 2019
The current draft looks like the work of a ten year old using his school computer for the first time.

Back to the subject of Camerone, we got ourselves a couple of take away hamburgers and two beers (Erika had a bottle of water;) ) and went down and sat on the beach. The curfew has been extended for another month 22:00 to 05:00 and you are still not allowed to buy any alcohol. My two beers came from my dwindling reserves.
Right, I'm off to do my sport as since I started writing this Nature had called me again and then Erika got up to feed the cat. As It's my job to make her coffee in the morning, I'm running late. I've no set time, but it's important to keep to a routine.

40 years ago, on 4th May, 1980, Јосип Броз (Josip Broz), best known as Marshall Tito, passed away. Ten years later, after a continued downhill move, the country he had managed to keep united, Yugoslavia, started disintegrating. The process would unfortunately be long and painful.

The comment about people blaming Tito for the civil war in ex-Yugoslavia was from Dusaboss. Not sure why at some point it appeared under my name. Anyway, I was just mentioning the 40th anniversary of Tito's death. For the rest, not really my business and I have no personal interest in the matter, apart from historical interest.

No problem there. Please, erase my post (I did report it- #618). In it's present form it could appear as a provocation - my intention was to point the mix up with posts and only that.
