The Glock 17FR arrives in the regiments of the Army
January 12, 2021
Several Army regiments have started the transition to the Glock 17 Gen 5 semi-automatic pistol, renamed Glock 17FR in France. At the forefront, the 9th Marine Infantry Brigade (9th BIMa) of Poitiers becomes the first brigade to receive the successor of the PAMAS G1 and PAMAC 50.
In January 2020 , the Ministry of the Armed Forces retained the Austrian Glock GmbH for the supply of 74,596 pistols. A 44 M € contract won in association with Sellier and Bellot (Czech Republic) for 9 × 19 mm ammunition and UTM (USA) for training kits. A year later, the Glock 17FR gradually arrived in the Army.
A pioneer on Scorpion with the 3 rd RIMa, the 9 th BIMa is once again at the forefront for the new generation pistol. Three of its units have received an initial allocation to the 14 th base of the support material (14 e BSMAT), also based in Poitiers: the 126 th infantry regiment (Brive-la-Gaillarde), 2 e regiment marines (champagne) and 6 e engineering regiment (Angers). For the 126 th RI, the 520 copies received correspond to 50% of the final allocation, said the Army.
The 14 th BSMAT received a first batch of 5,000 Glock 17FR on December 16. As the only national maintenance center specializing in electronics-weaponry, it has since carried out control and conditioning work on pistols before their distribution to the forces. The goal for its civilian and military personnel? Make sure that the next units that go to OPEX can leave with their new weapon.
Ultimately, 80% of the fleet will be collected by the Army, 10% by the Air and Space Army and 8% by the French Navy. According to the Ministry of the Armed Forces, all of the forces will be equipped by 2022. On the Army side, each infantryman will then have a Glock 17FR in double allocation.
Apart from the standard version, part of the Glock 17FR will be adapted to accommodate a sound reducer (RDS), a red dot type MOS sight and raised sights to allow shooting with RDS. According to an article published last year in the magazine
Fantassins , these specific models will equip parachute commando groups (GCP), mountain commando groups (GCM), dismounted engagement assistance sections (SAED) and cynotechnical units.
