Any way I moved sexperts post from question&answers to 3 REI Today. It seemed more appropriate :).

To answer your question, I have done guard duty on Ariane as anyone who was in a company combat or who did a 4 month tour has done. Before anyone gets pictures of walking around the the rocket and taking selfies with the boosters in the background, it is far from that. The gendarmes yes, the legion no. You were in a perimeter around the base. In those days it was still very much surrounded by Jungle The legion is the first line of defense against sabotage, technology theft and journalists. We had to erect look out towers and clear 'lines of site' from one tower to the next. There was also a canon 20 mm Anti Aircraft battery in place.

Now here's a couple of funny/sad stories about the canon 20 boys. It was in the mid eighties and Ariane was still going through it's teething stages. They had orders to shoot any hostile or otherwise aircraft approaching within a certain distance. Obviously those were the orders and the gunner was to await confirmation before blowing an aircraft out of the sky. but no-one was expecting to see any light aircraft within the no fly zone.
🙄 Except that a couple of journalists wanted to get a scoop and hired someone dumb enough to fly over. they were quickly spotted and all hell let loose. Did they fire and blow them clear to kingdom come? No.
At our level we never did find out the reason, however heads did roll.

Another pair of enterprising journalists managed to get up to the canon 20's base and click off a couple of photos before being intercepted. When the newspapers came out with the heading- French- "the legion is guarding the CNES", it showed a legionnaire asleep in the seat of the gun emplacement. It turned out that he was still hung over from the night before.
