Worked at Tay valley joiners. .and there was this german who had done Stalingrad,. Caught frost bite and had his toes amputated
Was a lot of ex P.O.Ws who settled in my area after the war and their liberation. ..POW camp where i lived
The mother, first time she ate chocolate was from a detainee
They were almost in semi liberty

Farm in Sussex where at one time I was evacuated to had many Italian POWs' working the land. Many were only too happy to be out of the war. They were virtually free. Some stayed on after the war.

Aye, most worked as farm labourers here too...and the saw mills (remember one ,italien who went on to be an ice cream van man. ..)

had a guy where i lived who was a plumber..Otto was his name. was U-Boats. married & stayed.

Same in Canada, two towns near where I live had reportedly the largest German POW camps.
Most of them worked on farms like sugar beets and grain crops.
Many of them returned after the war.
In one historical report it was mentioned that they mostly kept themselves law and order within their camp.
Only a few have tried to escape.
