Has anyone seen this one (been trying to find it online, but no luck) Looks intriguing...

Hmmmmm, its a local South African movie. Not sure if its out yet.
According to the South African government the recces don't exist. Unofficially there are 2 Recce units, the 4th Reconnaissance (Specialises in amphibious warfare)the 5th Reconnaissance (SpecialIsing in Land operations), their motto's are "Iron fist from the sea" and "we fear naught but God." Takes almost 2 years to be fully badged and operational, some years there are no successful candidates in selection. A recce holds the number 7 spot of longest sniper kill (2.1km in the DRC 2013).

On a side note the recces and 32 battalion were the only non racially segregated units in the Apartheid days with the SADF.

I'll have to check that one out. The only film I've seen featuring Robert the Bruce was 'Braveheart'.

? Hah, you don't say.. Interesting information, hate when they 'adapt' the story . I loved Hoffman and Newman version, looking forward to see the new movie.

Does anyone notice the legion tattoo on Papillon's chest in the remake?

St Joseph is where the legion has a centre de repos In the distance you can see the mainland. On weekends and PLD, you can go over there. On Royale there is a hotel and bungalows. It's about 20 mins by boat from the mainland. Nowadays there are no sharks circling the islands. Back in the day there would have been as there are only cemeteries for the wardens.
As you can see, no huge cliffs to jump off.

The tat certainly looks like a guy in a Képi Blanc... but something about the figure's lips struck me as weirdly effeminate. So, I did some digging for a better image:kb.jpg
... Now I'm unsure if the tattoo is supposed to depict just a particularly androgynous Legionnaire in a rather battered Képi, or a woman wearing a 1920's Cloche.

Post Schitum: Let's split the difference and call her Miss (Frumpy) Képi Blanc, 1931

Isn't good part of Papillon made up by author? I heard that he actually combined stories from other guys and also not so nice things about him told by other prisoners.

All good movies, but I have a more simple taste in violence now, so I quite like the Blackadder goes forth episodes.

The Sgt Major in ‘it aint hot mum’ reminded me a lot of our Adjudant Chef Bethery in 2 REP in Algeria. There was his buglar by the name of Baches, usually known as Baccus, who liked his drinks a lot, and some times he would be strugling to blow the ‘light out’ tune in the evening after a long session in the foyer. Then we could hear Bethery shouting ‘shut up Baches’ on the top of his voice, and the whole regiment would burst out laughing.

War is not only doom and gloom and apocalypses. There are funny moments too, and those are the ones I most like to recollect in my memories of that time.

OK Sexpert,
By your handle I can assume that you have some knowledge of all things sexual in nature, but have you ever had sex with a cactus? I could tell you a story about that if you are interested and not too offended by sexual explotation of plants.

OK watch these pics and let me know if you see anything sexually alluring in them that your average sex starved legionnaire in Algeria couldn’t see.

No, they are very prickly, but I’ll let you in on a secret (hush, hush, don’t spread the word), if you cut a slize of the edge of one of the cacti a bit diagonally from the bottom up and put your fingers in the opening you will experience a wet and warm sensation, not unlike ‘you know what’. You have to be careful in avoiding the prickly bits, of course, just like with a woman.

And the story? It involves a lieutenant, a luger, a snake and a cactus. But that’s for some other time. Night all!
