bonsoir légionnaires,
I’m a 21 year old, who is training for the legion, I’m studying French and, doing PT with my ex sergeant who was in the Nz commandos, I come from a proud army background with every generation serving in the army. I look forward to the discussion and help I will get from you current and ex légionnaires. I am looking to be in at the latest 2024.

kia kaha e aku tungane ma te atua koe e tiaki i roto i o pakanga kei te heke mai (stay strong my brothers may god protect you in your future battles)

Bienvenu,

You wrote ex sergeant. Has he left the army or you? If you, being 21 did you have a short contract or does NZ has draftees?

OfficerJames 24,

Welcome to the forum I believe you could render an excellent Hakka. If so your national race make superb soldiers. Certainly the British armed forces have benefited by their service. Some have also made a name for themselves in our SF.

So your former Sgt was a former NZ commando. I became a commando aspirant in the year of 1956.
Now I remain a happy and contented dinosaur with my Coveted Green Beret.

I’m currently training again for the NZ army last time I applied I failed my attitude test and passed my physical with in the top 10% of the country, so if I get in I’ll wait till 2024 before the legion, but if not I’ll go next year

So the NZ army has 2 year contracts? Just enough for basic slills and some excercises. Why leave after 2 years, are yu joining to enlarge your changes with the legion cause yu will have some previous military experience? Legion does not care, they mold yu anyway how they want.

I’m going part time it’s a five year contract you can leave at any point, but you’re right the legion doesn’t care, is part of the reason I want to go

I'd like to point out that the legion nowadays allows you to leave within the first 6 months.
Not good at all.
If you are going to go all that way then make sure that you have the right mindset to stay for 5 years.

so even in regiment? no more fysical punishment or a " ranger" of a CCH up your @rse when yopu are to slow and now a 6 month period to go "civil"?
integration in the french army begins to make the legion loosing its mystic appeal.

In 93 when assigned to the REP as a dutch Signal specialist (Unprofor) frist thing they told me was that Legion rules overrueld the ones from the UN meaning we had to salute sergeants and above (dutch army you salute no one, not even a general) when passing by and to follow orders without questoning cause if they smacked us in the head there was noting they could do about it. Good thing though was that when there was a UN alcohol ban in bosnia we were drinking, even at lunch, cause legionnairs had the right to drink

1956 Suez, Operation Musketeer, RM commandos noted that the Legion was vastly different with internal discipline. First secure target, absolutely ruthless, then ensure safety and care of themselves above all other orders. Cdos rode on Legion tanks and debussed to use the bayonet. As I have previously written, at that time the Legion was the most battle hardened of units in the world. Their units had many former WW2 veterans mainly German.

Wrong attitude to say to oneself; I will give it six months and if I don't like it I will opt out.
The best aspirant is one who is totally committed and not a chancer. You must have what I call the 'want factor'.
