Hi Mark think the big south African was Steel if memory goes right he had dual nationality was accepted to do officers course for the Royal Marines but could not wait the length of time for intake so came over to us! Big Kiwi one punch from 3cie watched him drop a German in the foyer after a long night on the “K” and the Mafias started messing with each other😀
Don’t no about you but think in some ways it was a bit better BITD yes things have got modern but that old work hard play harder and if you mess up take it on the chin attitude was ok with me but hey things move on!
Trying to remember the name of the Wee Brit cross country runner that could run for fun and for the regiment (2REP) was it not Bates that held the record for the assault course if not it was the other! Cheers.
I think we have too many memories of the lads we served with!.but I wouldn’t have it any other way!😉

Thanks Mark...I hope you are well. A photo from the border region of Rwanda-Burundi-Congo 1991. The young fellas turned up wanting to join us and fight. Told them all to go home, get a note from their mums...LPN brother.

Dave Cooper sadly passed away on the weekend. Dave was 2REP transmissions. He was attached to 3Cie to Chad and Djibouti in the early 1990's (6 years service 2REP.) I still remember he was setting up comms at N'Djamena (Chad) airport on top of the tower when the mortars came flying in. Dave stood there smiling as if to say "well if its our time to go...it's our time mate". Dave loved his wines...R.I.P Dave

Thanks Mark, my own photo here for all...Dave on top the tower at N'Djamena, Chad (Nov-Dec 1990) airport making radio contact with Calvi about 30 minutes before we started getting hit with mortars and rockets...

The ones we served with became our true friends and our past friends just do not hold a candle. I learned the hard way after returning home to Louisiana my friends, all but one, just don't have the time any longer, a quick call seems too much to ask.
