Do you think some EU countries should have their version of the FFL?

I'll read up on it but I'm fairly certain you can once you are an official resident of that EU country, the time scale for that can vary country to country, it's all about being an EU citizen and equality, but as I said before you would have to speak the language perfectly and be educated to their required level.
No, this is not the case.

You can't join the British military unless you are a British, Irish, or Commonwealth citizen, and even then it is unlikely that you will get the highest security clearances for certain jobs unless all of your grandparents were born British.

You can't join the Swedish army unless you are a Swedish citizen, the German army unless you are a German citizen, etc.

You can't join the French military as a foreigner unless you join the FFL.
Here you go , Joining a foreign army.

You have to use your brain a just a little bit , A foreign national of any nationality who has indefinite leave to stay in the UK ( All EU citizens automatically have this) can apply for British citizenship after 5 years residence , any British citizen can apply to join the British armed forces .

  • ritish Armed Forces - The British Army has continued the historic practice of recruiting Gurkhas from Nepal to serve in special Gurkha units. The Gurkhas are selected and recruited in Nepal, and are expected to keep their Nepali citizenship throughout the length of their service.[25]
  • In 1989 previous restrictions on the enlistment of Commonwealth citizens in the British Armed Forces were lifted, following recruiting difficulties amongst British citizens. Under the new provisions Commonwealth citizens were permitted to enlist directly in any one of the British services and significant numbers did so in subsequent years. From 2013, all Commonwealth citizens except for those from Cyprus, the Republic of Ireland (not a member of the commonwealth) and Malta must have resided for 5 years in the UK before being allowed to join.[26] As of the 23rd of May 2016, some of these restrictions for certain positions requiring residency in the United Kingdom have been lifted for Commonwealth citizens, due to recruiting difficulties.[27]

Some people over thinking. Crow is correct. Nƶ french or germans are serving in the UK armed forces or anyone else out the eu. The only germans i knew of had a british father or mother and were army brats. Commonwealth countries. If this was the case as you say then why are the germans still asking for a german pass & citizenship in their army. The police here and any other Organisation. In fact my son is joing the prison Service and needed a german pass. They are talking about an eu army but this is still being planned. Then maybe then you can join. Not now

Britain has traditionally sourced military recruits from the former colonies of its empire, which in the first half of the 20th century morphed into an international organization known as the Commonwealth, now a bloc of some 2.3 billion people and 53 nations, including Australia, India, Canada, Kenya, and Fiji.
Facing similar personnel shortages to Germany, the British military is now also relaxing its rules on allowing foreign nationals to enter. The Ministry of Defense announced in November that it would no longer require Commonwealth citizens to have lived in the UK for five years before joining up. But no other citizens are considered: so EU nationals, for instance, need not apply.

Thanks for the link Surfguy, some interesting info in there.

As you can see from the link, no two EU countries have the same regulations regarding foreigners in their armed forces. This means that there is no EU-wide policy on this. When each country signed the EU treaty, defence policy - which includes recruitment for the armed forces - was NOT on the table for negotiation. Can you imagine the newspaper headlines if it was? "EU forcing foreigners into our armed forces!"... not likely.

OK, so what do you think the recruiting sergeant in the AFCO is going to say to a Polish or Finnish passport holder who wants to join the Welsh Guards after living in the UK for 5 years?

Anyone know what it's like in the Spanish Foreign Legion?

From what I've read on the internet it no longer accepts foreigners, the "foreign" part of the name now supposedly refers to the expectation of foreign deployment instead. The online sources don't appear to be definitive, however.

It would be interesting to hear of any direct experience with them.

Its about your legal status on the day , if you have lived in the UK for 10 or more years and behaved you can apply for a British passport , if granted you an apply to join the British Armed Forces, If you marry a British girl you can sometimes get a passport in around 3 years.

The initial contract in the Legion is for 5 years and for a very good reason. .. (even if it's out of date)
Any imigrunt living in France for 5 years or more can apply for naturalisation. ..
Easy way or the hard way. .?
