If you are looking for cheap flights from the U.S, Skyscanner dot net is a great place to start. They compare flights of most major airlines and booking agents.

Example Sept 2012: New York to Nice, France - Roundtrip fare $605 up to $2200 economy class.
(we flew NY - BERLIN - NICE 17hr @ $605 round trip)

Being flexible with dates, airline and route can save you $$$

Peak season/higher price: Usually starts the first day of Spring ( March 21, 2013) through August

Low season/lower price: October through March

Cheap days to fly: Monday through Thursdays are generally cheaper, red-eye (overnight flights) and midday flights

Cheapest time to fly: Generally early morning flights

Most expensive days to travel: Fridays and Sundays (Saturdays)

Try booking at least 6 weeks in advance for cheapest flight

Airlines only post a limited number of seats at a reduced fare at night and these go very quickly
