[Question] Help needed please.

Hi guys,
I was given a Bayonet made in St.Etienne in 1880. The story associated with it is, that The Bayonets were presented to the British Navel officers as a mark of gratitude by the Legionnaires for being evacuated after some battle. This particular bayonet was past down to the grandson or great grandson, then on to me.
Would anyone know of such an event regarding the evacuation?
