Good i can swim like a fish :) navigation underwater must be fun in murky waters
Hi Big Boy, I haven't got so much as stories to tell about divers in the REP but rather as facts.
The video that you have just shown is all of the REP, with the exception of the pool, although there is a swimming pool in the REP the one in the video seems longer than 25 meters.
Navigation underwater at night or in murky waters is more or less the same as during the day. Allow me to explain, You are heading on a bearing using a sea compass and you are timing how long you have swum before changing changing direction. You will be taught how long it takes to cover 100m, 200m, 300m over a length of time. Everything is put on a plaquette

Your binome will be attached to you with a length of rope. I know all this from my days at the centre amphibie being a motorist working with IO.

While these are the only French combat-diver units, other French units have divers, including:

  • the military engineer units of the French Armyhave two types of divers:
    • the spécialistes d'aide au franchissement (SAF, "specialists for help in clearing"): swimmers trained to recon and clear banks and bridges to permit their use by military vehicles.
    • the nageurs d'intervention offensive (NIO, swimmers "for offensive actions"): they accomplish missions similar to combat swimmers but in rivers and estuaries, to destroy bridges inside enemy territory for example and belong to an engineer-regiment.
  • some commando units like the commando group of the 2nd foreign parachutist regiment and the special unit forces of the Army and the Air Force have offensive divers.

Hey Bigboy

On instagram are 2 cool sites about plongeurs. One is called DINOPS. They are Divers from 1REG. The other one is something called like plongeurs, which shows pics from Diverunits all over the world.

From my research there are Dinops in 1REG, 2REG and 2REP. Alos you can find a video about the GCM working with the Dinops together on youtube. its really short. I think 1REG divers focus on underwater demolition but im not sure.

Diving is to dangerous for me.

I don’t want to be one of those guys that goes below decompression depths, then rips his friends breathing mask off, because I was scared.

I believe legion divers don't go on such depths (over 40 m), Joe ,Pink Folyd what you say?

Also I think what you talkin about don't have much with depth of diving (or does it?) certainly don't have anything with decompression. (Apart fact that you can't go to surface because your blood would boil. :) )
There is certain gear where sometimes air mixture need to be sat up. If mixture is not right you got impression of losing breath and some people then start panicking, significantly increase breathing and that is bad while having gear.

Why you think you would be that guy who will start panicking? Did you have panic attacks before? I did when I was kid, then I realize with it is and was able to control when happens. At the time I didn't even knew what that was, but when get older I realized that were panic attacks.

Thinking about I see how that could be dangerous and even deadly on deep dives. Honestly I would feel much safer to dive with someone who had panic attacks in past, one who can recognize and control them. That can happen to anyone and if that happens to you while diving deep ... Man you are in big problem. No way someone can describe you how panic attacks looks like, only way is to experience yourself

i doubt if any legion Divers go through decompression or use diving bells. Could be wrong. I do not know if they exit from Subs like US Navy Seals or SBS do. even then i am not sure about the pressure or depths. we need an expert on here who was a Diver !

I'm not an expert on diving, far from it. However in the military you have different levels, exactly the same as in civvy street. You start off with your baptism and then go deeper (to cut a long story short such as learning the different hand signals, sharing your mouth piece) until you reach stage one, which is signed off by a certified diving instructor. You then go on to stage two. All these qualifications, much like your driving licenses are compatible in civvy street.
In the REP -as most legion regiments- you are encouraged to join the various clubs. I know one kiwi who played rugby for Ile Rousse which is a big town, for Corsica. I also know of an adjudant who worked in the Centre d'amphibie who was a diving instructor in a Civvy club in Calvi.
You can learn how to weld underwater not to mention the Holy Grail of diving with pure oxygen. Instead of going deep, you are limited to 6 meters below the surface. Not really a qualification sought after in civvy street, but you will have been qualified as a diver before even attempting the course.

Regiments with divers:
1 + 2 REG (Plongeurs de Combat Genie)
2 REP 3rd Company, Nautical Combat specialty

The PCG in 1 + 2 Genie have commando status. Rep doesn't, except for GCP
