I hear when you screw up in the Legion, they confine you to the Legion prison for a few days. What is it like?

Don’t know how it is now, but my experience is that the further you got into Africa and away from France the conditions and way we were treated stepped up gear or two, but remember if you f*up, you smoke a big fat cigar and get on with it after all it’s not the boys brigade!!
Also the length of time in jail is down to your officer and that takes it to a all new level, I remember getting 14 days for really Just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, 3days into passing the mess he shouted to the escort that’s enough time for him and my 14 days were over but I did have a habit of getting locked up at weekends once the beer was flowing down the harbour in Calvi, or for that matter anyplace were wine and beer and 501 was on tap!

We had one captain who gave you the choice of eight days in jail or a smack in the chops.
Unfortunate were those who chose the eight days, they got both!

happened in the British Army too, the Infantry were worse. Remember seeing a guy who had to run up & down stairs holding a shell. if he dropped it or stopped he was punched by the provo Sgt. I was standing drinking a tea at the time, did feel sorry for him. was a Wombat Drill round they had in the Guardroom. won´t name the Battalion. :)

yeah..was one of these feckers...haha. all bulled up.

In the 1950s' we were offered an official charge or an NCOs' summary justice. We preferred the latter since it did not result in an entry in your pay book. Normally with the former you received a belting.

As a recruit I was marched off the parade ground under escort for 'Dumb Insolence' just for staring at my drill Cpl when reprimanded for a minor infraction. :rolleyes:Then I went to the guardroom and had to clean the heads and cells with a toothbrush. Followed by an extra kit muster and extra drill on the 'mad acre'. We grew up quickly and discipline was often violent. Now the little darlings would be all writing too their MPs'.;)

I do not know if the charge of 'Dumb Insolence' still exists.

Remember when guys refused to Soldier, they got put in a cell Naked. The reason being if you refuse to Soldier you've no right to wear the Uniform. The most funny one though was a guy who thought he was a Kick Boxer wanted to fight. 2 of the Provo Staff went into the cell & gave him a beating. So he was not Van Damme after all...haha

Too be honest I'll take a hiding over a long winded lecture anyday. I still remember my hidings from my mom:ROFLMAO:. Most of the time people know when they've done wrong so sitting and kumbaya around the topic is a waste of time. Good hiding serves as a reminder. Sometimes the system needs a proper hard reboot.

I think most of punishments/ sanctions are the same in every army. Sometime, the difference between punishment and training is only in how you call it.
As one of my sergeants said: " Welcome to the Olympics! Here, "games" never end!"
(exemples: pushing buildings (then putting them back to place), shovelling the dark out of the room, etc...)

There are two forms of punishment in the Marine Corps, (1) the Brig, that is prison and it is for those convicted at a Courts Martial and (2) Restriction for 45-days and 45-days extra duty, cleaning the heads and etc, house arrest essentially. Once a troop did the 45 and 45, they would prefer the Brig over it.

We used to have what was called Correctional Custody Unit, it was more severe form of Boot Camp to readjust the "attitudes" of the young Marines, take big rocks and make gravel. A stint in CCU usually adjusted the attitudes very well. The staff of CCU were Drill Instructors that really never transitioned back to Fleet Marine Corps life after their 3-year tour of Duty as Drill Instructors, they knew how to bring the pain.

I then conclude that punishments in armies was basically universal.

Yep, I'd say all services are no matter what country are plagued by the dumb assess, the minority, and they give all a bad name. Take this for instance, source Marines.mil, the official home page for the Marine Corps. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page you will see a link for Courts Martials. The link is up to date as of the December 2018 Courts Martials. The key here is read the "General Courts Martial, this is the serious stuff. Here's an example from Nov 2018. Note the prison sentence, 25-years.

"At a General Court-Martial at Joint Base Elmendorf- Richardson, Alaska, a panel of officer and enlisted members convicted Staff Sergeant J. A. Hale III of wrongful use of a controlled substance, rape, assault, adultery, kidnapping, indecent language, and failure to obey a lawful general order. The members sentenced the accused to reduction to E-1, total forfeitures, confinement for 25 years, and a dishonorable discharge."

In the US Military, yes, punishable under the UCMJ. Max punishment is forfeiture of all pay and bennies, a dishonorable discharge, and a year in the slammer.
What if your wife cheated on you first?

On of stupid US laws (this is probably is law in some other countries too, but in California for sure :)). It is: "Woman after divorce takes half of her husband's wealth". Man that's ridiculous. I didn't dig deep into that law, but looks to me that it's very much abused in US.

I mean law is made with good intentions woman sometimes giving up her career so she can raising up children and she also infesting in common home and wealth. It really wouldn't be fair if divorce came to just kick her out on street without anything.

But man, there is so much abuses of that law. Obvious gold diggers taking half of man's money after extremely short period of time in marriage. And courts keep judging in their benefit even if everything is clear that isn't fair. Things just getting worse with this political-correctness-liberal-mania. Is not good to be white straight Caucasian male these days.
Also there is states where you can't have oral or anal sex with your wife. :)

This all does not have much in common with legion, doesn't?

You could still get charged; the two offenses don't cancel each other out. If your wife is a civilian, well, she's not subject to the UCMJ; strictly civilian law. If she's also military, then potentially both of you get fried.

At the risk of running this train slam off the rails; I've seen the latter happen. Basically, two female soldiers in the same squad--formerly friends-- got into a spat. Not sure what initially caused it, but basically both of them had so much dirt on each other that when the sh*t went down, it went nuclear. Errbody started snitching for everything. Like 7 people ended up going down for all types of stuff; adultery, sodomy, fraternization, conduct unbecoming, sexual assault, you name it.

But that's a story, among others, that should probably have their own thread. Maybe I'll start my own -- call it "Stupid Story Time", featuring Crawdad.

Nope DUSABOSS, you are either married or not married, NO GRAY AREA THERE. No not all who committed Adultery is punished so severely. Reading his Command I can deduce this guys likely serving on Recruiting Duty. The girl, assumed, is underaged, less than 18 years old. He tried to cover it up, that rang up its own charge, and he may have held her against her will. For 25 years he really screwed the pooch.
