My father was a proud Legioneer. He fought in the Narvik Campaign. He was proud of his medals. Not long after these photos were taken, some little scrote stole them, to satisfy his drug lust. Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain replacements ??.

At the time there were very few Brits it the legion. when war broke out in '39 if you joined after that date you were considered a deserter. It those days is was mainly Germans trying to escape Adolf, Italians - Benito, Spanish -Francisco & Slavs.

My father was Spanish. He had to leave Spain after the Spanish war, as he was against franco.

That's what Pop said . Lots of Germans. But he added that the Spanish soon put them in their place. Lots of animosity because of the German involvement in the Spanish war.

Historical note.

Many Spaniards joined Number 30 Inter Allied Commando for WW2. They were welcomed as tough, disciplined and battle hardened veterans.

Chas the Dinosaur. Trained by former WW2 Cdos.

It was the same in the 1960's, there were only two Brits in all of the 1er REC and I met one during instruction in the 1ere REI.

Error.

The main Spanish men were in Number 10 Inter Allied Commando. This also comprised of French, various Germans and Austrians under assumed British names, Norwegians, Poles, Dutch and people from other occupied countries.

3O Commando was an engineering assault unit again with mixed nationalities. It was also a main intelligence gatherer for all operations. It even included code breakers, locksmiths and safe blowers.

Now it remains the main intelligence gatherer for all of Commando Brigade and specialises in electronic warfare. Amongst other classified skills it also has what might be described as a kidnap unit to capture or eliminate high value targets. It is multi linguist.

If I was serving it would be the unit of my preference.
