How come the jihadist knew their exact location?
Not paying for an escort (I do not mean the guides), is at your peril...disgrunted gaurds who were not given the employment, maybe?
Trust no local fud in these areas, as I have mentioned before

Yep... President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita (aka IBK) has relinquished power yesterday, following a mutiny in a military camp in Kati, near capital city Bamako. He had been struggling with various opposition movements and some of the high ranking officers of Malian Army for the last 6 months.
Funnily, that’s how IBK came to power in 2013, after former president Amadou Toumani Touré (aka ATT) was ousted after another mutiny in the same military camp. One more factor of uncertainty in a country plagued by armed jihadist groups...

They (i'm not sure who exactly) have closed all the borders, so no getting in or out. It is worth noting the French military are spread out over 5 countries with Mali being centre stage.

DAKAR, Senegal — The military officer who declared himself in charge of Mali after leading a coup that ousted the West African nation's president this week received training from the United States, the Pentagon said Friday.

Col. Assimi Goita, who emerged Thursday as the head of the junta in power, worked for years with U.S. Special Operations forces focused on fighting extremism in West Africa. He spoke regularly with U.S. troops and attended U.S.-led training exercises, said officers from both countries, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Two soldiers of the French Barkhane force were killed in operation Saturday in Mali "after the destruction of their armored vehicle by an improvised explosive device", announced the Elysee in a statement, adding that a third soldier had been wounded in the 'explosion.
Two soldiers of the French force Barkhane au Sahel, of the 1st parachute hussar regiment of Tarbes, were killed in operation Saturday in Mali by the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) as their armored vehicle passed, announced the 'Elysium.
"The President of the Republic learned with great emotion of the death of two French soldiers, Brigadier-Chief First Class ST and Hussar Parachutist First Class Arnaud Volpe, after the destruction of their armored vehicle by an improvised explosive device , this morning during an operation in the region of Tessalit in Mali, "the presidency said in a statement, adding that a third soldier was injured in the explosion.

45 French soldiers have died in Mali since 2013
"The President of the Republic bows with deep respect in front of the sacrifice of these soldiers of the 1st regiment of parachute hussars of Tarbes, died for France in the accomplishment of their mission against terrorism in the Sahel", added the Elysée who, at the request of the family, did not publish the name of one of the two soldiers killed.
Operation Barkhane counts around 5,100 soldiers. In total, 45 French soldiers, including the two soldiers killed on Saturday, died in combat in operations Serval (2013) and Barkhane (since 2014), according to the general staff. A count that does not include accidents.

Expressing his "very sincere condolences to their families, relatives and all their brothers in arms", Emmanuel Macron again called "for the immediate establishment of a civil political transition in Mali, in accordance with the expectations of its people, of all the countries which support it, and a sine qua non for an effective fight against terrorists ".

sorry about that Ossie O. I was preoccupied with my Channel only just noticed it this morning.

It is interesting to see the "boots on the ground" stats. :ROFLMAO:
At least when you join, you'll know that if you stay in a combat company, there is a strong chance of you getting a 4 month tour over there.

Thanks for that L.P.C.
Let's not forget that the guys on the ground. I mean it's not as though a couple of French fighters were just passing by and noticed a group of people and decided that they had the look of terrorists about them. They would have first had to be located and confirmed armed and be away from local population.
I'm not taking any thunder from the pilots who have done a great job.

French airstrikes kill over 50 people in Mali
French forces said they have killed more than 50 terrorists and captured 4 four others in an operation in Mali. The French defense minister said the action was a major blow to al-Qaeda.

The French government on Monday said that more than 50 terrorists linked to the al-Qaeda group were killed in central Mali during an operation launched by its anti-jihadist force in the region last week.
"I would like to reveal an operation of great importance which was carried out on October 30 in Mali by the Barkhane force, which was able to neutralize more than 50 jihadists and confiscated arms and material," said French Defense Minister Florence Parly.
"Four terrorists have been captured," French military spokesman Colonel Frederic Barbry said.
Explosives and a suicide vest had been found, he told reporters, adding that the group was "about to attack (an army) position in the region."
The French operation took place in an area near the borders of Burkina Faso and Niger where government troops are fighting an Islamic insurgency, Parly said after a meeting with members of Mali's transitional government in the capital city of Bamako.

The offensive was launched after a drone detected a "very large" motorcycle caravan in the "three borders" area, she said.
As the insurgents took cover under trees to escape surveillance, the French forces sent in two Mirage fighter jets and a drone to launch missiles, "neutralizing" the terrorists, Parly said, adding that around 30 motorcycles were destroyed.
Parly said the military action was a significant blow to a local terror group that has ties to al-Qaida via the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), a regional jihadist alliance.
The defense minister arrived in Bamako after meeting with Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou and her Nigerien counterpart Issoufou Katambe.

Her visit to Mali comes after its interim government secured the release of four captives held by Islamist groups, in exchange for about 200 prisoners — some believed to terrorists.
One of the freed captives was 75-year-old Sophie Petronin, the last remaining French hostage in the world.
France has deployed more than 5,000 troops in the Sahel region to combat insurgents.
