Not only his actions that won him the medal of Honor (I think two actually), but his whole story that is told in the book about him, "Alone at Dawn". And though he was attached to SEALS at the time, he was actually a combat controller in the Air Force!
The title is a little misleading, as I immediately thought of William Carney, the first Black American who earned his congressional medal of honor on July 18 1863. He was promoted by was not awarded the medal until May 1900.
