Hi Bob , merry chrimbo
The Green Howards are an infantry regiment comprising of one battalion. Like most regiments in the British army they have strong ties to a particular part of the country (this does not apply to Royal Marines, Parachute regiment and to a lesser extent the Guards regiments and Greenjackets).
The Green Howards recruit their soldiers from Yorkshire one of the largest English counties, in particular the Leeds area . This means all the guys come from the same place and have a sense of regional pride and identity. Apart from that there is nothing much to say about the Green Howards, they are as normal as a normal British infantry regiment can get, no different from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment or the Devon and Dorset regiment. Of course they will have their own traditions and sense of regimental pride. It looks like they are getting disbanded now and merged with the other 2 Yorkshire recruiting regiments - The Duke of Wellington regiment and the Prince of Wales Own Yorkshire Borderers .
It's all a bit sad in my mind. These guys were the backbone of the British army, doing endless tours in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia etc. Never claiming to be anything special just pure unadulterated honest to good infantry, no airs or graceses never looking for glory... Now all that history and sense of regimental pride will be gone at the stroke of a pen !!!!
