I love that frase. Because I can say bum fun is fun without sounding gay.
Bottom line we all go to war or whetever together, I would not want to ship out without you guys supporting me and when you think of it you would not want to go out without us either.
Basic is just as primitive for all of us, no matter what branch your in. No matter what colour of Uniform or fancy tags you will be wearing later. We are all there to learn the same basic skills.

I have been refered to as a lot of things PW, but never a boy. Not even a Gay boy, before. Could be due to my lack of testicles and testosteron and instead the appearence of boobs and estrogen?
However **** you for your lack of thinking and doing some research before posting, like you tell everyone else to do.

In the 1°REC everybody is instructed in map reading and there are orienteering courses both on company (Squadron) and Regimental level. Also (and it exist in every regiment) you can join the regimental orienteering club and participate in civilian competitions during the week ends. However I suppose that means taking some personal initiative, and not sitting on your ass waiting to get everything feed by a teaspoon (not so easy for everybody).

In the cavalry map reading is very important, and a Lance corporal (1cl) can perfectly be in charge of a VBL, and hence find himself on a solitary mission miles away from his platoon commander. Ask Raider about how many times we where miles away from anybody trying to get a look over a hill or in another valley. On the other hand the 1°REC goes on different commando courses where map reading and the reality of your map reading competences are put to a test.

While in the famous 2°REP (not starting a quarrel here), the legionnaires are a few meters away from their Sergeant who usually are a few hundred meters away from the platoon commander. Their war is 300m long (that is how far they can kill anybody).

We keep trying to explain and demonstrate why the REC is the best regiment because it demands BRAINS as well as BALLS and BRAWN. We did train with explosives in the REC for our BMPE, not in Basic Training or even the CME. Everyone in the Legion doesnt do everything and NO Legionnaire decides what he will do for himself; his capabilities will determine that.

Young man, I think your perception of elite forces is somehow misunderstood or at least very different from mine.
It is not because one is jumping out of a helicopter that one becomes “eliteâ€￾. Anybody can jump out of a helicopter in to the water; anybody can train in hand to hand combat, but that does not make them an elite force.

In my humble opinion an elite force is troops that can deploy anywhere in the world and to their mission for as long as needed under whatever conditions.
The possibility and success of such operations is obviously for a little part depending on the training that they have received, but it is for a very large part decided by the mental attitude of such troops.

What is in my opinion very “eliteâ€￾ with the Legion, is that they do not ask questions, but goes wherever they are requested to go, and once there, does the job with the means that they have. The Legion doesn’t have the best guns, the best trucks, or the best radios, but the Legion go somewhere and get the job done.
For the Legion it is not a problem to stay 9 months in the desert (over Christmas), with no leave or communications with “homeâ€￾. The Legion doesn’t complain about the food (if you have a problem with the food it means that you are not yet hungry enough). The Legion teaches you to not complain if you have to live for months in tents. Actually the Legion teaches you to be very happy for any tent because you do not have to sleep on the ground under your poncho.

The Legion teaches you to take care of your jeep (or similar) with such care that you could think it was your child, and this just because you will very well know how much better it is to drive (even in an old jeep) then to walk for miles. You will so well take care of that jeep because you know that if something brakes it is you that will have to fix it with a string or a chewing gum. Actually you will have learned to have the most “strategicâ€￾ parts in reserve (stolen from the regimental workshop) because in the middle of some godforsaken African country they might not be there. Anyway a breakdown that stops you and your mission is simply out of question.

In my opinion an ELITE soldier is not the guy who is the best trained in jumping out aircraft, hand to hand combat or fancy obstacle courses. Obviously this is good training but it is not enough.
In my opinion an ELITE soldier is somebody who can live in a “shitholeâ€￾ on this planet for a year without news from his family, bank manager, insurance company, whatever. Somebody who can make food from one onion and two potatoes. Somebody who can stay dry (with the kit he have) even if it is pissing down with rain for days, and if he gets wet is still able to take life with a smile.
Somebody who can fix a vehicle with string and a chewing gum. Somebody who can drive a 4X4 without wrecking it, and without wasting petrol. Somebody who can drink water (boiled) from a rotten well without complaining about it. Somebody who can sit and wait, do nothing, just wait for days and weeks without worrying about it.
The list goes in but I hope you got the point by now.

The Legion is a unit that does (and concentrates on) the mission with the means they have, and don’t worry about the means they should or could have had.
That is what makes them an elite unit.

First of all welcome to the forum and incidentally your first “broadsideâ€￾:)

Let’s think a bit… Hmmm… Do you really think that the Legion hires people from all over the world, speaking different languages, coming from different social and economic backgrounds, and that we start by teaching them explosives???

No !!!!!!

The basic training is exactly what the name says it is. BASIC !!!!!! VERY BASIC !!!!

Basic training is aimed at changing a person from anywhere in the world, into a basic soldier that is capable of functioning in a Legion regiment. With functioning I mean that he is capable of getting up in the morning and knowing what to do, that he is capable of understanding BASIC orders, and execute basic soldering tasks. THAT IS ALL!!!

After basic training you will be able to maintain your weapon (to clean it and understand if it is malfunctioning), to hopefully be able to shoot with it, in other words to operate safely on a shooting range (something that is not always so obvious). You will be capable of doing some VERY BASIC combat missions (the first missions in your miserable career). Se poster and Se déplacer (remember the little presentations I posted earlier??). For the moment most of you guys don’t even understand the meaning of the two little French words. How are you going do be “big Rambosâ€￾ if you don’t understand the most BASIC of the BASIC missions?

You will learn about radios, but you will not be any transmissions specialist, you will be a standard stupid (that has everything to learn) legionnaire. You will be able to change the batteries, change the type of antenna, turn on the bloody thing before setting a requested frequency, but THAT IS ALL!!

You will most of all, learn to clean and clean again. Simply because that is one of the most important BASIC MISSIONS!!
You will learn how to do your personal maintenance; that means cleaning your ass and your uniforms, as well as how to put them on and what to wear at a given moment.
You will learn how to run and how to walk for miles. Sure you know already, but you do not know how to do it while keeping your mouth shut and without asking stupid questions.

You will NOT learn much about combat, simply because the group (yes the group, you as an individual has no whatsoever value) is too stupid to understand the simplest basics of infantry operations.

Military life starts with BASIC training and a large majority of the future legionnaires (yourself included) are completely incapable of absorbing more than the simple basics for the first 16 weeks.

Forget the explosives, forget the fancy combat missions, forget all the crap that your miserable little brain has seen on TV.

thanks for the harsh post mate. truth hurts. these kind of posts from the experienced push me to think twice and consider my motivations.

everyone who intests abou FFL should read and remember this post..

I have a question; what kind of weapons do they teach you use during basic training other then the FAMAS? Will there be practise shooting with a sidearm?

Not really, it is basic training.

I am not 100% sure (my memory is sometimes not complete), but maybe you will have the occasion to fire a bit the AA52 and the LRAC (whatever version they use now).
Somebody that has more recently passed the basic training could maybe give some more precise information in this matter.

However any “side armsâ€￾ (pistols) are highly unlikely; anyway since almost nobody has a pistol as service weapon, for what purpose would they receive such instruction during basic training?

I thougt it was standard in the army to have a pistol, or is it only for the officers? What about grenades, it is necessary to know how to use them.

I don't know in the Legion, but in the Romanian marines only officers and some specialties ( like the recons for instance ) had the side arm.

No only the people that need a pistol will have a pistol. Normally it is used as a backup weapon for those who for various reasons haven’t got a FAMAS.
Mainly officers, however they are slowly changing their mind and more and more are carrying a FAMAS. Others are tank commanders, or other legionnaires serving with another heavy weapon.

Grenades are on the other hand used by everybody. It is a part of the basic training to learn how to use both hand grenades and rifle grenades. However the “accentâ€￾ in basic training is rather to learn how to safely prepare them, carry them, and how to use them (also safely) on the shooting range.

Don’t forget that the basic training is aimed at learning (discovering) the different materials and how to operate them safely. Tactical usage comes at a later stage once affected in a given regiment that has its own technical specifications.
